The Interesting story of Basajjabalaba.
In some ways, the story of Hassan Basajjabalaba's rise to wealth is as unreal as a modern fairytale. In the early 2000s, he rocketed from obscurity into the limelight when his company, Yudaya International, won a $10 million bid to redevelop the Constitutional Square. Before then, little was known of the man who simply became known across the country as Hassan B.
While many puzzled over his sudden wealth, it turned out he had inherited a prosperous hides and skins business from his father. Expanding this legacy, Basajjabalaba built the Haba Group of Companies into the country's biggest exporter in the sector. He bought a string of hotels, added the City Abattoir to his portfolio, and founded Kampala University, later renamed Kampala International University (KIU). At the height of his early reign, rumors claimed he owned a fleet of 720 cars with personalized number plates.
However, his empire slowly started crumbling around 2004. The Uganda Revenue Authority began investigating him for massive tax evasion, and Interpol kept a close eye on his operations over a reported $11 million debt to Italian businessmen. Analysts blamed his troubles on heavy loans and investments that lacked quick returns. Soon, whispers circulated that he was quietly selling off his prized acquisitions just to survive.
But Hassan B was far from finished. By 2011, he found himself at the center of one of Uganda's biggest financial controversies. After the government cancelled his contracts to manage key public assets like Owino Market, Nakasero Market, and the Constitutional Square, he demanded compensation. The state eventually paid his companies a staggering 142 billion shillings. This massive payout sparked absolute outrage, triggered parliamentary probes, and forced multiple government ministers to resign in disgrace.
That historic compensation sparked a legal war that has dragged on for over a decade. Civil society groups, led by Legal Brains Trust, sued to recover the public funds, calling the payout an illegal enrichment. Even recently in 2024 and 2025, the Supreme Court of Uganda was still handling fierce legal battles regarding this multi-billion shilling saga, keeping his financial dealings firmly under the microscope.
Despite the endless controversies and legal hurdles, Basajjabalaba remains an absolute titan today in 2026. His crowning achievement, Kampala International University, has grown into a massive institution with study centers across East Africa. In fact, he was even named "African Educationist of the Year 2024" by the African Leadership Magazine for his work transforming private education. The man who once faced total financial ruin is still standing tall as one of Uganda's wealthiest and most politically connected tycoons.
Do you think Hassan B is Uganda's greatest business comeback story, or are his methods too controversial?

His victory surprised many. He had no money and no God father. But the guy mastered the art of doing his stuffs clandestinely, smartly and humbly connecting with the veterans.
He was underestimated and despised as well as ,but whoever was at Kololo that day witnessed the strength of competing smartly and pressing the right buttons.
His victory taught me alot, and I am still closely following his steps.
