The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is calling for a full probe into authorities violence during Indonesia’s protests: “We are following closely the spate of violence in Indonesia in the context of nationwide protests over parliamentary allowances, austerity measures, and alleged use of unnecessary or disproportionate force by security forces. We stress the importance of dialogue to address the public’s concerns. The authorities must uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression while maintaining order, in line with international norms and standards, in relation to the policing of public assemblies. All security forces, including the military when deployed in a law enforcement capacity, must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials. We call for prompt, thorough, and transparent investigations into all alleged violations of international human rights law, including with respect to use of force. Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB) mendesak adanya investigasi menyeluruh terkait dugaan penggunaan kekuatan berlebihan aparat keamanan dalam gelombang aksi protes di Indonesia yang menewaskan enam orang. “Kami memantau secara dekat perkembangan di Indonesia, khususnya rangkaian aksi protes nasional atas tunjangan DPR, kebijakan penghematan, serta dugaan penggunaan kekuatan yang tidak semestinya oleh aparat keamanan,” ujar juru bicara kantor HAM PBB, Ravina Shamdasani, dalam keterangannya, Senin (1/9/2025). Ia menekankan pentingnya dialog untuk menjawab keresahan publik. “Seluruh aparat, termasuk militer bila dilibatkan dalam penegakan hukum, harus mematuhi prinsip dasar penggunaan kekuatan dan senjata api sesuai standar internasional. Selain itu, kebebasan media dalam meliput secara independen tanpa tekanan juga wajib dihormati,” tambahnya.
