Software firms are making the switch to usage-based pricing given the rising cost of models. Intuit is the latest to join the list after cutting 17% of its workforce yesterday. This list will continue to grow as token cost increases and companies can no longer subsidize.

AI isn’t running out of data as much as it’s running out of clean data. The open web is being flooded with synthetic slop, and models are increasingly trained on model output. Early models trained on a mostly human internet. The next ones train on the residue of the last ones.

Did you know every AI chip in the world is born in a room cleaner than any operating room on earth? A human hair is 75,000 nanometers wide. A transistor on a modern chip is 2 nanometers. one dust particle destroys the wafer. During early EUV production, TSMC allowed less than one stray particle per week. Every worker wears a full body suit so their skin doesn't kill a $600M machine's output. The H100 powering your AI query came from the cleanest place humans have ever built.

Going to be like prime crypto every day. Three of the largest IPOs in history queuing up in one year. SpaceX targeting $75-80B in June. OpenAI going for $1T+. Anthropic at $900B+. Combined raise is ~5x Aramco's all-time record from 2019. Every week brings a new model drop, beaten benchmark, feature launch, competitor raise. Every GPT-6 or Claude 5 release is the same as an earnings release for most companies. Claude Code worse than Codex this week? OpenAI +10%. Claude Code better the next month? OpenAI -15%. DeepSeek drops something? Both fall 5%. Add SpaceX's 30% retail allocation (industry norm is 5-10%), perpetual futures already trading these names 24/7 on Hyperliquid, and S&P 500 fast-track rules being rewritten so they enter the index within weeks of listing. Most retail-heavy mega caps in market history. If you thought semis were volatile, this trio will be 10x.

Today I woke up at 4am to an email saying I’ve been laid off from Meta. I gave this company everything: woke up at 10am, opened Workplace, liked 3 posts about AI, joined 2 meetings muted, and worked from my pool. But most importantly, I’m grateful that my mouse movements will continue creating value for Meta’s AI systems. Onward.

You can't spend two years telling young people their career is over and then be confused when they react like this.
Gabriel@gabriel_horwitz

AI has become the villain on X. And I can't help but think its mostly the fault of top labs and leaders. We've all seen the commencement speakers getting booed, how layoffs are getting blamed on chatbots. Even massive Datacenter protests are spreading. And i don't blame them. People studied their whole life, were told college and a 9-5 job is the "safe" and "right" path. And suddenly people are telling them it's not. So I get the panic. But the story is being told dishonestly and we've reached a point where something has to change. There are three things I see happening leading the distaste. 1. The doom is a marketing strategy. Dario went on Fox yesterday saying half of entry-level white-collar work could be gone in a year. He's been saying this for the past two years. Some of that is true but most of it is positioning. Anthropic's whole brand is "safe ai provider, we protect you." Saying AI will eliminate millions of jobs reinforces that brand. He did the same thing with Mythos, saying how dangerous it was, can't be released but then gave it to tons of enterprise customers. And again with the Pentagon. Its their branding and it's hurting public perception heavily. 2. The labor story is reallocation, not annihilation. Meta is cutting 8,000 jobs in recruiting, sales, middle management, Reality Labs. They're also moving 1,000+ people into AI builder and AI pod lead roles. These are layoffs because the budget is needed elsewhere. Same thing that companies have been doing for hundreds of years. New companies will hire aggressively because they have more work. There is no magic ai system replacing workers in enterprise companies. You still need people managing it. 3. The industry leads with the wrong story. AlphaFold won a Nobel. AI tutors are reaching kids who would never have had one. Drug discovery timelines are collapsing. Someone with ALS got their voice back this year! BUT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT. The industry talks about AI like a sci-fi (civilizational risk, AGI in 2 years, mass unemployment) when it should be talking about specific drugs, specific patients, specific outcomes. So much good will come out of this technology (and already has), but we present it in this bad light. Bad news sells, but good news should too. And all the accounts reposting every Anthropic launch talking about how they killed so many jobs are only making it worse. I know plenty of you will read this and disagree, citing studies, citing leaders, citing the layoff data. Fair. But both things can be true at the same time. AI can be displacing people AND the industry can be making it sound worse than it is. People are right to be worried. Nobody should have to apologize for being scared of a technology that's rewriting their entire future. But the worry can't be the whole story we tell, because it's nowhere near the whole story that's happening. The AI industry has the worst PR strategy in tech history and people still wonder why the younger generation is so worried.
