Children born in the United States are granted legal citizenship because their parents were granted legal citizenship. The purpose was in response to how to treat and classify the slaves. Slaves were considered properties and properties do not have rights. Free slave slaves were now recognized as persons, and residence and citizens, granting them legal rights. The children born in the state states by parents with legal rights, is bestowed with the same legal rights This does not apply to illegal parents, and simply because of the location where you happen to be. So, does that mean that you go to any country, Papp kid, and you automatically become citizen of that country? SCOTUS has to consider the real purpose behind granting citizenship to those were born in the states. It goes back to slavery. Slaves were no longer property for granted citizenship, and their children born was to be protected class and granted the same privileges and rights of their parents who have become citizens.
