@emaxerrno @Kingwulf I don't think GitHub and Google Docs are the opposite of email. They are all "the same" in the sense that they are *asynchronous* communication. The "opposite" of email is synchronous tools: meetings/calls, and instant-messaging like Slack and its friends.

@Kingwulf We started with mailing lists and the friction was v high. everyone wanted GitHub and google docs. So having been on the other side this sounds ideal but as a data point didn’t work for us that well. It does sound reasonable but I couldn’t get good traction on that

@RReverser @gmail @customdomain Right. If Google had a sensible family-oriented custom domain pricing (not $6 a month per person) I would have paid it too (I currently use the regular gmail.com). Nobody would pay $30 a month for a 5 person family just to get a nicer domain.

@IsraelFruchter אגב, לפני עשור עוד אמרו לי - "אין ברירה, אין מספיק כוח חישוב מרכזי, אז בלפטופ אתה סוחב את כוח איתך", אבל גם זה כבר לא נכון. יש בענן אינסוף כוח חישוב, ודווקא בלפטופים אין מספיק (למשל, אנחנו כמעט תמיד מקמפלים על מחשבים נוספים, כי הלפטופ איטי מדיי).

@IsraelFruchter מאוד חבל לי איך האנושות "התדרדרה" ללפטופים. כבר לפני 30 שנה - עם טכנולוגיות כמו יוניקס, X11, Plan9 ואחרות היינו במצב שאדם יכול לעבוד עם סביבת העבודה האהובה שלו והקבצים שלו וכד' מכל מסוף פיזי שהוא מוצא. היום מי שלא סוחב את ה"מסוף" שלו - הלפטופ לכל מקום, הוא אבוד. >>>

קרה לכם שהגעתם לעבודה וגילתם שלא הבאתם את המחשב ? זה קטע קטע. שוקל לעשות את זה בצורה קבועה יחסית, ככה פעם באיזה שלושה חודשים. LOL

@OurielOhayon @eranshir Eran is correct that recruiting worldwide is not easy. But *working* remotely with fully global teams is easy. I've been working in @ScyllaDB exactly this way for the last 8 years. Some companies didn't understand this point yet, but perhaps the pandemic changed their thinking.

@eranshir @OurielOhayon Israeli companies don't have to limit themselves to Israeli employees. It was true before the pandemic, but working remotely during the pandemic made it even more obvious.

Richard Stallman is the reason I didn’t start contributing to open source (then called “free software”) in the 90s. I’m not the only one. He and his followers pushed out a whole generation of female developers, just at that critical time when open source adoption was widening. twitter.com/alicegoldfuss/…

@IsraelFruchter The most ridiculous example I remember is some software we had in IBM, that some people couldn't install because the package was bigger than 2GB (15 years ago, it was a problem in some OSs). It got to that size because nobody thought package size is an issue. But it was.

@IsraelFruchter Today some people say "who cares if a package is big?" well, that's exactly what the IBM developer of that Java IM app thought. But people care. It takes not only disk but also a lot of memory at runtime (because different JVMs can't share text pages). >>>

Those threads are so sad, cause both sides have very good arguments...
