@nyssenizer Sijuwade is a great example that you can build a career out of making things up. That's "analytic theology" for you. Shameful.

@orthobrohammer Otherwise, we’re just getting tripped over “isms.” The point of the paper is simply that free will arguments are not sufficient ones. Of course, if something’s de facto heresy to you, you wouldn’t care about free will arguments so there should be no problem.

@orthobrohammer And there is no definition provided in the paper without direct reference to Gregory’s own words—so if someone can say “no being will remain outside the saved” and not be a universalist to you, then that’s whatever position is being discussed.

So he would draw aside the veil of mystery and explain in a spiritual sense the meanings of things which, if understood literally, appeared to be teaching what was wrong.” (Confessions 6.4)

when I used to criticize your holy ones for holding various views which, plainly, they never held at all. And I was happy when I heard Ambrose … recommend most emphatically … this text as a rule to go by: The letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

Blessed Augustine, favorably recounting the Pauline-Origenian hermeneutics of Saint Ambrose of Milan: “I was glad… that the old Scriptures of the Law and the Prophets were set before me in such a way that I could now read in a different spirit from that which I had had before,-

“a few of the more simple of those who appear… within the faith of the Church esteem that there is no greater than the creator God,… but believe such things about him and would not be believed even of the most unjust and savage of human beings.”
