This shiny New Space Economy certificate marks the end of my @MIT trilogy that started in 2020, when I was tipped off by a client that many Silicon Valley leaders were leaving their jobs to do a PhD. Predicting a new world order, these tenured, Valley-based innovators strategically chose not to get caught preserving something they could see would be out of date quickly. With a systems view, they identified that their skills — and the products they were working on in 2020 — would be obsolete, and that the entire world order — economic, social, environmental, geopolitical — would change. They also realized that the organizations they were working for weren’t yet ready for the leap, and that it was time to research the future. That tip-off tied in with the final few chapters of my first book "Elephants Before Unicorns" in 2019, and the message was loud and clear: I had to reinvent my own trajectory, too. My day job was and is leadership transformation for my clients, but as I advise everyone — learn it all, and learn it all as fast as you can. I took my own advice and went all in on three MIT courses focused on ESG, AI, and the New Space Economy — while also launching "AfterShock to 2030: A CEO’s Guide to Reinvention in the Age of AI, Climate, and Societal Collapse." And a podcast (Season Two is coming soon). Over these past few years, I’ve been facilitating reinvention for any organization and leadership team brave enough to admit that future winds smell pretty different — and who know that reinventing themselves and their organizations needs to be co-created with urgency. Six years later, in 2026 — they were right, weren’t they? So, what did I learn this time? Well, at precisely the same time I was in the New Space Economy programme, EY declared the new “Cold Rush,” while we’re witnessing some of the fastest changes in any industry since the mobile waves of 1998 and 2008. The New Space Economy programme was mind-meltingly transformational, and I recommend it to any VC or new product pioneer keen to be part of this new “Cold Rush".
