A 69-year-old woman was shot and killed in broad daylight while simply using her walker on a sidewalk in East Harlem. My heart breaks for her family and for every Harlem neighbor today. Just days ago in the Bronx, at Haffen Park during a community basketball tournament, one man was killed and four others were seriously wounded—another senseless blow to Black and Brown neighborhoods. It is always these communities that bear the brunt of violence. They deserve safety, dignity, and peace. This must end. Public safety is Job 1. We need more police, not less. We need precision policing—not dangerous socialist “defund, disband and disarm the police” bumper-sticker slogans. We need a Mayor who understands that trained police, not social workers, must respond to domestic violence calls—and that it is police officers, not Department of Transportation employees, who must handle traffic stops where many illegal guns are confiscated. The stakes are too high.
