My friend @leontxogarcia turns 70 today. I don’t think there is any single person who has influenced my life as much as he has. First, when I was a kid, he was instrumental in igniting my love for chess through his TV show and the articles he published in newspapers and in the Spanish chess magazine 'Jaque'. He made me realize that chess was not only a beautiful game, but also a fascinating microcosm, full of interesting characters and stories. Later, when I became a chess journalist myself, he was the kindest and most generous colleague you can imagine, always happy to offer a rookie a word of advice or support. And yet he was so humble that he would also seek my opinion. In a profession where egos so often get in the way, he is a remarkable exception. With a shared passion and similar personalities, it did not take long for us to become friends, sharing countless trips and experiences. If we added up all the time we have spent in the same hotels, it would probably amount to a couple of years of co-living. I would say our friendship has been cemented as much around a chessboard as at restaurant tables across the globe, as we both love food. Just yesterday I reached out to him to plan our next meal together. We happen to live only a few kilometers apart, but we both travel so much that it is not always easy to meet around here! I have met very few people with a comparable work ethic, patience, and perseverance, always 'grinding' to promote chess and bring it to the masses. And with an insatiable curiosity, always eager to discover new places, meet new people, and hear new stories. Seventy is a major milestone. One of my goals now is to convince Leontxo to write his memoirs. I guarantee it would be an extraordinary read, one that would transcend chess. Feliz cumpleaños, amigo! ❤️
