The best way to support a #sustainable, livable future for all people on our planet is to rapidly decrease our use of fossil fuels like oil, coal, & gas, and we need to start now. You can help support this global effort by signing the #FossilFuelNonProliferationTreaty

This treaty has already been endorsed by the nations of Vanuatu and Tuvalu, two islands on the front lines of sea level rise, focuses on non-proliferation, a fair phase-out, & a just transition. Let’s step up to support vulnerable communities on the front lines of climate change.

However, major climate agreements from UN meetings in Paris and Egypt have not mentioned oil, gas, or coal. We need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to keep nations of the world accountable for phasing out fossil fuels

The #UN have used treaties before to make global agreements on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, stopping use of chemicals that were creating a hole in the ozone layer, and creating #climate agreements

#Capitalism is an economic system in which privately owned businesses provide goods and services to consumers. In order to maximize profits, businesses rely on cheap, energy-dense #fossilfuels like coal, oil, and gas

#OffshoreOilDrilling releases #pollutants into the ocean, such as drilling fluid, drill cuttings, trace metals, displaced sediments, and produced water (very salty water trapped underground)

This would ideally prevent #ReactiveMitigation (AKA, waiting until something goes horribly wrong) by promoting proactive, data-informed management decisions that prevent terrible ecodisasters such as oil spills and benthic coral die-offs

To better protect benthic ecosystems (and other #MarineEcosystems), predictive science should be included in risk analysis and other models, which would enable regulators to make informed decisions about offshore oil

Local #GulfCommunities that depend on the gulf for their sources of income and food were also heavily impacted, and gulf #fisheries were closed for up to a year after the spill occurred, and still conduct long-term #monitoring to ensure their catch is safe for consumption

Marine life suffered; dolphins had reproductive failure and poor health, #DeepSeaCorals near the wellhead were smothered, resulting in lasting damage that will take decades to regrow, and oil is still being found in gulf sediments and #marshes years and years after the spill
