As of yesterday, I have decided to resign from my role as a columnist for The Washington Post — a newspaper that I love. In a moment like this, everyone needs to make their own decisions. This is the reasonfor mine. 🧵

As @thelauracoates said, “I love being next to a brilliant woman.” My @AfricanaUPenn colleague @DrMChatelain gets to the heart of McDonalds politics: exploiting working people as props without supporting fair wages & labor protections.

Thanks @thelauracoates @CNN for having me on to discuss the Golden Arches and the election. And I appreciate a host that can talk minimum wages, class politics, Calvin ads and McDowell’s !

@SRClanglois #TJ22H

The Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO has announced the official inscription of Bois Caïman into the UNESCO Network of “Sites that Connect History and Memory of Slavery.” This recognition made official on October 9, 2024, marks the first Haitian site on this global list, aligning with the 30th anniversary of UNESCO’s Slave Route program. Haiti and Benin have participated in the program since its inception in 1994. 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹 Bois-Caïman, where a 1791 Vodou ceremony sparked the Haitian Revolution, is a historic symbol of the fight for freedom and equality. UNESCO has also designated August 23 as International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, reinforcing the site's significance. The candidacy, submitted in January 2024 as part of a national heritage initiative, reflects Haiti’s ongoing commitment to preserving its past. This effort involved contributions from the Haitian National Commission for UNESCO, the UNESCO Chair of History and Heritage at the State University of Haiti, the Haitian Scientific Committee for the Slave Route, and the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO. Further efforts, including site delimitation in 2023 and plans for a Museum of Slavery, demonstrate Haiti’s dedication to enhancing the cultural significance of Bois-Caïman. The Permanent Delegation aims to collaborate with local and international institutions to ensure its preservation and promote its history through education, art, and research, symbolizing Haiti’s enduring fight for self-determination. Let me explain capitalism to you. A Haitian lives on a rich agricultural land w/ produce he can’t sell to earn a living. 🇺🇸 imports are cheaper & he can’t make $ to even buy those. He sells his land for cheap to go work under slave-like conditions on plantations in 🇩🇴. 1/ 🧵
