It’s too simplistic to say Germans “just need to work more.” Productivity is about investment, innovation, infrastructure, energy costs, digitalization, & strategic industrial policy. Germany’s economic challenges today aren’t the result of workers suddenly becoming lazy. For decades, politicians - including those in power now - shaped policies on energy dependency, fiscal austerity, digital infrastructure, defense, and industrial strategy. Those long-term decisions matter far more than whether someone works 38 or 42 hours per week. China’s model relies on heavy state coordination, subsidies, restricted labor rights, & geopolitical industrial strategy. Germany is a liberal democracy with social protections, strong labor standards, & a very different demographic structure. wow... blaming workers risks distracting from structural policy challenges.
