I came across the word vaginismus while I was reading one time, I looked it up almost casually and then sat with what I’d just read for quite some time. I’ve been meaning to talk about it since then and kept stalling, and I think part of that is the deeply internalized belief that women just don’t discuss these things openly. Seems like pap smear discourse is happening again. As a medical physicist I have had to observe cervical brachytherapy during my research on cervical cancer. This treatment involves a metal rod being placed through the cervix and into the uterus, often with additional needles inserted into the cervical tissue acting as additional radiation channels. For some tumours, this device is left inside the patient for 1-2 days to deliver a low dose of radiation slowly. This is horrifying to watch, and more horrifying to experience. Nothing is worse than cancer. Please get your smear test.
