This is the moment Florida Evans finds out James is dead in the Season 4 premiere of Good Times and Esther Rolle’s performance in this scene is one of the greatest pieces of acting in the history of Black television. What most people do not know is that this moment only happened because John Amos was fired. Good Times had no Black writers on the staff when it started and Amos kept pushing back on scripts he felt were inauthentic and demeaning to Black families. He was particularly vocal about the show putting too much focus on J.J. saying Dynomite while two of his other children aspired to become a Supreme Court Justice and a surgeon. Esther Rolle left the following season for the same reasons.
