Every 18 months, vets in South Africa sedate wild rhinos and chainsaw their horns off. They have to. A June 2025 Science paper confirmed it: dehorning cut poaching by 78%, while $74 million spent on rangers, helicopters, and sniffer dogs cut nothing measurable. For seven years, 11 reserves in the Greater Kruger area tried the standard playbook: rangers on foot, motion-sensor cameras, sniffer dogs trained on horn, helicopters running aerial sweeps. They arrested over 700 poachers. The researchers ran the numbers and found no proof any of it reduced rhino deaths. Dehorning cost 1.2% of that budget and did almost all the work. And it doesn't hurt the rhino. Rhino horn is keratin, the same stuff your fingernails are made of. The base where the nerves are gets left alone. Above that, it's like cutting your nails, and it grows back at about 6 to 8 cm a year. A vet darts the rhino with a sedative, blindfolds it, plugs its ears, and runs a chainsaw across the top of the horn. The animal is back on its feet within minutes. A 2020 paper found no measurable change in stress hormones, and researchers in Botswana checked behaviour in 2023 with the same result. Two years later, the team comes back and does it all again. It has to happen because rhino horn sells on the black market for $20,000 to $65,000 a kilogram, and up to $400,000 in Vietnam. By weight, it sits alongside cocaine, far above ivory, and at peak Vietnamese prices, above gold. Buyers grind it into powder for fever and hangover cures that don't do anything. It's just a very expensive fingernail. South Africa lost 352 rhinos to poachers in 2025, down from 420 the year before and over 1,000 a year a decade ago. One park, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, dropped from 198 dead rhinos in 2024 to 63 in 2025 after a full dehorning sweep. Poachers now go after dehorned rhinos for the small stub of horn that's left. Some kill them anyway out of frustration. Kruger lost 175 rhinos in 2025, almost twice the 2024 number, as the gangs shifted toward animals that still had horns. About 26,700 wild rhinos are left on the planet. South Africa has the most. To keep them alive, the country now performs surgery on every rhino it can catch, every 18 months, forever, because someone on the other side of the world wants a fingernail.
