After over 800 years of self-government in Ipswich @DHCLG have today announced plans to abolish Ipswich Borough Council with powers to be transferred first to a Suffolk combined authority and then (probably) a combined county authority for Norfolk & Suffolk with an elected mayor.

@LDHMarketing @ipswichstar24 A fair, if possibly partisan, point! I'd argue that a unitary for the whole of Suffolk would not be representative due to the urban/rural split.

@ojholmes100 @ipswichstar24 Yes. Local govt across the country is a mess. The public are clearly confused about which level does what. Aligning boundaries with eg the NHS etc would make sense where feasible. But if all local councils in Suffolk go to a permanent Conservative county, is that democracy?

Opinion: At last a council shake-up that looks good for Suffolk residents ift.tt/KhV1kM4

@ipswichstar24 The whole project has been a disaster for IBC who should never have been involved in the first place. When it was announced by Ipswich Labour back in 2017 the completion date was 2020! And planning permission has NOT been given due to SCC concerns over traffic.

Nothing to make building on brownfield sites more viable. Ipswich has allocated previously developed land at the Waterfront for thousands of apartments which, due to costs such as decontamination, would mean a developer would lose huge amounts on each scheme. No help here.

Angela Rayner's proposals for planning reform, lauched today, are mind-boggling for Ipswich. The target for new builds will increase from an advisory 466 each year to a mandatory 755. Over five years, Ipswich would need to build at least another Ipswich Garden Suburb. Where?

Worrying news for Ipswich Borough Assets (the property company of Ipswich BC) that Carpetright are heading into administration. Carpetright have a big store at Anglia Retail Park. Commercial property is risky - as I have repeatedly warned them.

Proof today that increasing new build housing has little to do with planning reform and mandatory targets. Barrett estimates 13,000 to 13,500 houses this year down from 17,200 two years ago due to macro-economic factors particularly high interest rates.

News today of the two biggest builders at the Ipswich Garden Suburb. Looks like Crest Nicolson have accepted a buy-out offer from Bellway. Probable that streamlining the companies will reduce build-out rates, at least in the short-medium term.

Thankyou Ipswich to all the folk who’ve made this a fantastic election - positive contest after 4.5 years of negative incumbency from Tom Hunt who couldn’t even decide which Ipswich constituency he was up for. #GE24 #voteLibDem

Now official - Ipswich MP Tom Hunt was trying to abandon Ipswich to get into Dan Poulter's old seat in Central Suffolk & North Ipswich - and even approached Bury St Edmunds Tories. Shows what he thinks of the town.

@IpswichMuseums It's the old Crown and Anchor in Westgate Street. The frontage looks so much better without the terrible Debenhams building.
