@DrPhiltill However, as you point out, size distribution must play an important role for streamers in the ejecta sheets. To add another ingredient, recent observations of the asteroid Ryugu suggest that the grains covering the asteroid have high "porosity" (Nature 579, 518–522, 2020).

@DrPhiltill My bet would be that several rays should form, but one or two main rays should predominate, caused (or perhaps driven) by the large extent of the solar panels.

I’m shocked by the streamers in the ejecta. In ordinary granular splash experiments we see nothing like this. A few musings about this in a thread… /1

@DrPhiltill Hi Phil! For the past few years, the granular community has been trying to explain (and replicate) the rays formation observed on the moon surface. There are two mechanisms for producing rays: (i) the surface can present undulations (see journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…)

@DrPhiltill Finally, this year we published a paper showing the impact of projectiles on a surface in free fall (~microgravity). We also observed the rays formation for non-spherical projectiles 🧐(link.springer.com/article/10.100…).
