What about 'inflammasome inhibitors' as a treatment for Parkinson's? There is a lot of interest in new drugs like NT-0796, Selnoflast, Dapansutrile, VTX 3232 and ZYIL1. Bina Patel and colleagues summarize this and more in a new study in @journal_PD. Key Points: - The authors remind us that inflammation and immune dysregulation have links to Parkinson's pathogenesis. - A lot of interest in repurposing 'existing anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory agents.' - They ask whether our approach to inflammatory therapies in the past has been suboptimal and not tailored. My take: I like this article as it forces us to rethink where we have been with inflammatory therapies. Inflammasomes in particular are of great interest. The inflammasome is a multi-protein complex that is activated w/ infection and w/ injury. It is part of our first line of defense. The inflammasomes recognize bad things and activate an inflammatory response. They 'sense, they adapt and and they effect.' Over-activing inflammasomes can can trigger a more chronic inflammatory response and we will need to consider therapeutics that are appropriate for the long-term. content.iospress.com/articles/journ… #Parkinsons
