They were in Russia and had no reason to appear, so the whole thing was treated like a free play, a chance to smear Trump with insinuations no one would challenge. But they miscalculated. One of the defendants did show up and started pushing back, and suddenly the whole strategy fell apart. At that point, the DOJ had to beat a retreat from a case so flimsy it couldn’t withstand even minimal scrutiny, because it was never real, just a hollow accusation dressed up for headlines.
