Main Ní Tuathail, aged 14, was one of the first people in Ireland to be photographed in colour. These photos were taken on 1st May 1913 in the Claddagh by two French women, Marguerite Mespoulet and Madeleine Mignon-Alba. #galway #photography #ireland #claddagh #LoveIreland

The Fishmarket was as important to the town as it was to The Claddagh. Extract from piece written by Tom Kenny. #galway

It was used to thicken stews and soups, for cough mixtures, and as a cure for young calves when they were sick. If you were sick there was no better cure than a mixture of lemon juice, carrageen, and a drop of ‘the crathur’.

The Fish Market c1900 and how the area looks today Women sold the fish, not the actual fishermen. As soon as the men landed their catch, the women took over. Most brought the fish to the large rectangular piece of concrete that you can see in the photo...#WildAtlanticWay

Long Walk was also known as ‘The Long Wall’, and later as Rope Walk because a local rope manufacturer used to spread his ropes all along the walk.

In the 18th century, Long Walk was built by the Eyre family as an extension to the quays, and a breakwater to construct a mud berth. A number of arches were constructed to allow access from the town to the new quay but some were wrecked by a tsunami which occurred in 1755.

Delighted to be able to colorise some old photos of Galway, this one of the Fish Market at the Spanish Parade, c. 1910. What is now Jury’s Hotel is to the rear of the photo with the bottom of Quay Street to the right... #galway #claddagh #connacht #Ireland #IrishMuseumsOnline

Another throwback! Do you remember Moons, now Brown Thomas. This photo is from the 1970s - the street was pedestrianised in the late 1990s. #galway #connacht #gaillimh

Galway, Sunday, 11am. , about 11am, Our wonderful, beautiful little city was silent, but it will come back to life in time. What we are collectively going through today will soon become a part of Galway’s history, part of Old Galway. Galway

This is who we are. For now, stay safe, stay indoors where possible and stay away from other people. This time will pass and we will return to who we are. Gaillimh Abú #Galway

The new houses we see in the background are the backs of what is Claddagh Avenue today. There are no gardens yet in evidence so the houses are brand new, though curtains on some windows would seem to indicate they were occupied already. Narrative by Tom Kenny.

The village was declared “an unhealthy area” that year, so it was inevitable (in spite of many objections ) that it would be completely rebuilt. This photograph was taken while that process was going on.

This photograph was taken in the 1930s and illustrates the huge difference between the old thatched cottages in the Claddagh and the new houses that were being built to replace them. #Galway #galway2020 #connacht #galwaywest #galway
