The UniCredit takeover bid for Commerzbank illustrates how broken the Euro zone is. If the ECB didn’t periodically intervene to cap Italian yields - as it did in 2022 - Italian yields would be much higher and Italy’s financial system much smaller.

The idea that Southern Italy – and Sicily/Sardinia – receives large subsidies is a black legend.
What really happens is that the area receives billions in pensions every year. If we exclude pension payments on both sides, Northern Italy is indeed fleeced, but the money does not go to subsidies for Southern Italy and the islands (see the disappearing bars on the right side of the attached image). The transfers in Italy are generational. They may appear territorial because many people work in the North or abroad for part or all of their working life and return to the South upon or by retirement.
For example, if I were to return to Sicily in retirement, my foreign pensions would be classified as an export from Milan or Rome and as a fiscal transfer from there to Sicily.

@NCheron_bourse It certainly helped, but if it was just about subsidies Southern Italy would be booming now.
