@fiendformojitos i think grrm mixing and matching aspects of society from very different cultures and eras has resulted in the goofiest possible combos ever for seemingly successful civilizations. i think both mainland westeros and the iron islands are equally close to serfdom. as in They're Not

people don’t seem to know what serfdom actually is? The only equivalent to serfdom we actually see in the novels are the thralls in the Iron Islands (who also have more rights than the chattel slaves in Essos) and the rest of the country despises them for having thralls

A lot of cultures and states in Essos are significantly more politically and economically developed than Westeros but on the slavery point Westeros does have the high ground because feudalism and chattel slavery are different things and slavery is worse
