This jam goes out to all those who have loved and hope someone else is still around to love them later.

I am JUST DEVASTATED that Access has fallen off the list.
Matthew Ericson@mericson

At #nicar22 and struck by how prevalent R has become in data journalism, so I thought it would be fun to see how the hands-on classes have changed since my early NICAR days. Found a PDF of the 2004 NICAR schedule and totaled up the types of classes then and now.

It's always amazed me that somehow the starving peasants are the bad guys in this movie.

I also realize this is totally my fault because I don’t just accept the handy defaults available but 🤷🏽‍♀️

After spending a good few months in Tableau for work, I finally was able to use ggplot in #rstats again for ✨Actual✨work and I was brutally reminded that I really need to take the time to make custom themes/functions for myself because this is painful. 🙃

An academic zoom event yesterday with 300 international participants to discuss the Ukraine situation was targeted by Russian hackers who posted pornographic images, preventing the event from continuing as planned. Great support for free and open dialogue guys.

I don’t think you get how devastating these words are. They’re about people abandoned to totalitarianism twice in living memory. It’s not ‘hawkish bleating’ for them to want democracies. Words matter and you are revictimizing people who have suffered greatly.
Matt Stoller@matthewstoller

Forget the macho hawkish bleating, here's how the West directly helped Russia invading Ukraine. First, we refused to invest in renewable energy FOR DECADES. Second, we turned the USSR into an oligarchy. Third, we made a world safe for those oligarchs. Fourth, we expanded NATO.

The Ukrainian national anthem is a bop of course, but if you are looking for other Ukrainian music to enjoy I submit Go_A. Here is their amazing song Shum. The concrete dome in the background is Chernobyl. Go_A - ШУМ (Official Video) youtu.be/sDeMfL8Ib9A via @YouTube

I have tried to stay silent but ‘there is no war but class war’ is only something you would say if you’ve been amazingly lucky in life. Devastated families, orphans, refugees living in tents, kidnapped child soldiers, those traumatized by death and violence would beg to differ.

Just want to address the ‘all Slavs are the same so what difference does it make if Russia takes over’ argument. This papers over decades of deliberate cultural genocide. For example, in our lifetime, Belarusian will be a dead language, gone forever, and that is not accidental.
