It's now been a decade (😱) since I first listened to Noémie explain her IVEE (Individual Vulnerability, Exposure, Emergence) model in a lecture for my masters degree and it's stuck with me as one of the most thought-provoking and frankly clever things I've ever been taught.

1/ 🧵Just did a network analysis of the "far right thugs unite" hashtag. It largely seems to be a simulated scandal/outrage to promote the Reform Party and Nigel Farage and - while also being an attack on Keir Starmer.

We are pleased to have contributed to this important report. Crest was commissioned by @HMICFRS to carry out research focusing on the experiences of both current and former staff of all 44 fire and rescue services in England who have experienced misconduct while in service.
HMICFRS@HMICFRS

Today we published a report focusing on the handling of misconduct in fire and rescue services. HMI @RoyWilsher states that, although we are seeing early signs of improvement in how services tackle misconduct, pockets of unacceptable behaviour remain.

Yesterday the government announced the biggest real-terms increase in police-officer pay for 20 years. But that doesn’t fully undo cuts since 2010 of 21% for new officers and 9% for experienced officers, so officers are still thousands worse off. Details: lesscrime.info/post/police-pa…

🧵1/ Thread on the #Southport anti-migrant and anti-Muslim disinformation and propaganda. In this thread I highlight key spreaders of disinformation, the chronology, and some points about some of the inauthentic activity evident. I will focus on X.

Quantiative twitter is fighting about confidence intervals again, so here’s a reminder: confidence intervals are like ring toss.

Our latest blog, written by our Head of Analytics @olihutt, breaks down how we carried out our analysis of hotspots of unsolved neighbourhood crime, which was used as the foundation for Channel 4’s Dispatches new episode, 'Britain's Unsolved Crimewave'. crestadvisory.com/post/what-s-ha…

Researchers at MIT have questioned whether SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound) actually work. They suggest we might get better outcomes if we make our goals FAST (frequently discussed, ambitious, specific and transparent) not SMART.

I think the @C4Dispatches team did a great job of highlighting that 'volume' crimes can also be 'high harm' crimes. The impact of some of these crimes on victims is substantial and it was interesting to see from actual offenders that policing is not a deterrent for them.

There's so much more that could be looked at, and we barely had time to scratch the surface. I don't envy police forces, all of which have to balance an impossible set of demands.

This was a really interesting piece of work to see which neighbourhoods had the lowest detection rates in each police force. We often focus only on where crime happens, not what the outcome is, but this is getting more and more scrutiny.

Today, State of Policing, the annual assessment of policing in England and Wales by @AndyCookeHMCI was published. He explains the key findings and recommendations, including that despite efforts to rebuild public trust, the police are still struggling to get the basics right.

@gmhales @cassia_rowland @CrestAdvisory I think that's all fair and almost certainly the right decision to have made given the decreasing resources and increasing demand, but that's not much comfort to the people experiencing the high volume crimes. It's just an impossible square to circle.

@cassia_rowland @olihutt @CrestAdvisory There has also been a shift away from prioritising volume crime to higher harm offences, as targets were jettisoned and things like CSEA came to the fore. Crime outcomes stopped being a priority and were replaced by crime recording as a key metric for performance.

Thank you to @C4Dispatches for working with us to better understand whether there are UK neighbourhoods that feel forgotten by the police due to a lack of resources. We're pleased to see our analysis, led by our Head of Analytics @olihutt, presented in yesterday's programme.
Channel 4 Dispatches@C4Dispatches

England and Wales is facing an unsolved crime wave. Using exclusive analysis of police data by @CrestAdvisory, @C4Dispatches found since 2021 there have been more than 10,000 cases of theft around London’s Oxford Circus. Nearly 100% of those were unsolved by the Met Police.
