Cada gol olimpista fue apagando el ruido del Beira-Rio, hasta dejar en silencio a todo un estadio que veía cómo, una vez más, el Decano se metía entre los mejores de América. Y si hay un nombre imposible de olvidar en aquella noche, ese es el de Ever Hugo Almeida. Gigante bajo los tres palos, atajando penales en el momento más caliente y también teniendo la valentía de ejecutar y convertir el suyo. Un líder. Un símbolo. Un héroe eterno para el olimpismo. Historias como aquella explican por qué Olimpia no se entiende solamente desde los títulos. Se entiende desde sus hazañas. Desde esas noches donde parecía imposible y terminó siendo eterno. 𝘖𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘴€𝘹, 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 "𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙚𝙡 𝘿𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙨 𝙀𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩" In September 2010, Douglas appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and revealed that he had been diagnosed with advanced Stage IV throat cancer that August. He had suffered symptoms for nearly nine months, repeatedly dismissed by American doctors as something minor. He had a history of smoking and drinking, which were initially blamed. The cancer was actually located at the base of his tongue. When Douglas clarified this in 2013, he explained that his surgeon had advised him to tell the press it was throat cancer, partly to protect his career, since tongue cancer can in severe cases require surgery that affects an actor's ability to speak. THE HPV LINK In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Douglas attributed his cancer to HPV acquired through cunnilingus. He dismissed smoking as the cause and stated that this type of cancer was caused by HPV. The comment went viral and opened a global conversation about the sexual transmission of a virus most people associated only with cervical cancer. TREATMENT He was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, undergoing seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. He declined a feeding tube and lost 45 pounds( 20Kgs) on a liquid only diet. OUTCOME By January 2011, Douglas declared himself cancer free. He has remained in remission for over fifteen years. THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT In the 1980s, roughly 15 percent of throat cancers were linked to HPV. Today that figure stands at approximately 70 percent. The virus, specifically HPV type 16, tends to lodge silently in the tissue at the base of the tongue or in the tonsils, often going undetected until the cancer is already advanced. The typical patient has shifted from elderly heavy smokers to middle aged, non smoking men. One important point worth noting is that HPV related throat cancers, even when caught late, respond better to treatment than cancers caused by smoking and alcohol at the same stage. PUBLIC HEALTH IMPACT His disclosure had a measurable effect. During the week of his announcement, Google searches for HPV related terms increased by 62.5 percent, and tweets referencing HPV rose by 127 percent. Researchers at Oklahoma State University later studied and named this the "Michael Douglas Effect." Douglas headlined a fundraising gala for McGill University's head and neck cancer fund in May 2011, helping raise over one million dollars in a single evening. The broader lesson is that a single celebrity disclosure can shift public awareness in ways that no health campaign budget easily replicates. What remains an open question is whether that spike in curiosity translates into lasting action, such as getting vaccinated or visiting a doctor, something researchers in health communication continue to study.
