It was not until the 19th century that Ordnance Survey made the first complete, detailed map of Britain. It would take 8 decades. OS #maps were made in a particular order, for particular reasons. In a story in @TheEconomist we piece the maps together to trace how OS did it.

I really like this design idea. It does not present the lifespan of Hungarian writers and poets with a bar chart, but by writing out their names and spacing them apart. By Albert Házy, 1936. Anything similar? @Jasonforrestftw @infowetrust

Fascinating read with data journalism by the great @OliviaFVane on how Victorian surveyors tackled the task sheet by sheet, enduring hardship for eight decades. #mapping #history #dataviz @TheEconomist ▶️ economist.com/interactive/br…

There’s an interactive #map so you can explore the beautiful textures of these early Ordnance Survey maps for yourself Maps digitised by @BLMaps, data from @natlibscotmaps + Charles Close Society

@PrigithJ @TheEconomist The graphics in the article are largely built in svelte and d3. The map imagery is served as raster web tiles and rendered in the article using d3-tile. The scroller is built in svelte
