It takes 500-1000yrs for plastic to degrade.Billions of pounds of plastic can be found swirling convergences in the oceans making up abt 40% of worlds ocean surfaces.46% of plastics float & it can drift for yrs before eventually concentrating in ocean gyres. #plasticpollution

Plastic is the most common type of marine litter worldwide.Upto 80% of the plastic in our oceans comes from land-based sources. An estimated 5-13 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year from land-based sources. #plasticpollution #noplastic

As plastic is less expensive, it is overused. When it is disposed off in landfill sites, it does not decompose at a fast rate & hence pollutes the land or soil in that area.Every Year abt 100 million tons of plastic are produced all over the world. #plasticpollution #zerowaste

Worldwide, nearly 2 million single-use plastic bags are distributed every minute.Plastics do not biodegrade, but instead break down into small particles that persist in the ocean, absorbs toxins & enters our food chain through fish, seabirds & other marine life. #plasticpollution

By 2025, for every three tons of finfish swimming in the ocean, there could be one ton of plastic in marine waters.Projections indicate that by 2050, the ratio of the fish to plastics could be 1:1. Plastics comprise up to 90% of floating marine debris! #plasticpollution

If you’re in the restaurant/bar business, please consider changing to paper straws. Plastic straws are not recyclable and eventually end up polluting our oceans. If you already use paper straws, tweet me a picture and I’ll be more than happy to RT for your restaurant/bar. 💚
