Donald Sutherland was a significant part of my early years of cinephilia and quickly became one of my all-time favorites.
I vividly remember being absolutely blown away by his incredible monologue in JFK, gobsmacked by the iconic shot and twist from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, crushed by his performances in Don't Look Now and Ordinary People, hypnotized in Klute and literally jumping out of my theater seat when he showed up in an already bonkers film in Moonfall among other fond memories. His mere presence in a film instantly elevated the material and captivated you with your eyes glued to the screen and rapt attention. JFK is a great example of that, it's a great film, but everyone remembers the Mr. X monologue and in those moments, he is the most important character to observe and listen to. That was the power of Donald Sutherland and something that felt like it was passed on to his son Kiefer Sutherland as well.
He doesn't have the words Academy Award Nominee or Winner before his name, but like @RealKiefer rightfully said, he was one of the most important actors in cinema history and no amount of respect is enough. I wish this was not how I would be ending my night, but it is. I haven't written a proper tribute in a long time, but for Donald, I did. That's how much he meant to me and he deserved it more than so many others as well. I'll be revisiting his works for the next few months remembering this masterful talent and one close to my heart.
