The series is a Meiji-period interpretation of the long-standing Buddhist art tradition known as kusōzu (九相図 - "pictures of the nine stages"). Diverging from the standard nine-stage schema, Dōkyō composed this work across eight panels. The narrative starts with a seasonal landscape and moves through the stages of a corpse decomposing into a full skeleton before it's eventually scattered. The final panel shows a gravesite in the form of a traditional gorintō (a five-tiered stone stupa), symbolizing the memorial dedicated to the deceased.
Kusōzu (九相図) art emerged in Japan during the 13th century and was produced until the late 19th century in various formats - including handscrolls (emaki), hanging scrolls (kakejiku), and printed books. It's rooted in the Buddhist practice of aśubha (impurity) meditation, which involves systematically observing a decaying body across nine stages. This meditation technique was used to help Buddhist monks detach themselves from carnal desire, especially physical attraction to the female body.
One of the most famous examples of this art is attributed to Empress Danrin, a 9th-century figure from the Early Heian period. According to legend, Empress Danrin decreed in her will that her body be left to decompose in a public space after she died. She did this so the living could directly witness the impermanence of the physical body and advance on the path to Buddhist awakening.
