This day in history: #1August 1 August 1920 marked the end of an epoch. On this day, the nationalist leader and journalist Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak passed away at ‘Sardargruha’ near Crawford Market. Sardargruha was his lodging and base in Mumbai. After his death, Tilak's body was kept on a chair in this balcony on the first floor for 'darshan' as lakhs thronged the road outside it to pay their respects in torrential rains. Some women would shelter under nearby trees, light the wick of a lamp and rush to perform the arati of Tilak's body before the lamp was extinguished by the wind and rainwater. Later that day, Tilak's funeral procession to the Girgaon Chowpatty was joined by around 2 lakh people, including the city's textile mill workers. The Railways organised a special train to bring people from Pune, which was Tilak's home-ground, to Mumbai. One of the bearers of his mortal coils was Mahatma Gandhi and the other was Maulana Shaukat Ali. The Parsi traders of Mumbai ensured that all necessary permissions for his cremation were secured and donated sandalwood logs for the pyre. As Tilak was being cremated, a Muslim youngster threw himself on the pyre and was badly burnt. The Lokmanya was cremated in the padmasana position, an honour that is reserved only for sadhus and saints.
