Japan's security depends on extended US nuclear deterrence. However, this deterrence is no longer credible as the US removed all nuclear weapons stationed in East Asia after the cold war ended based on the assumption that regional conflicts could no longer escalate to the nuclear level. With a now nuclear North Korea, a rapidly militarizing China and a reemerging Russia, this assumption no longer holds. Beijing or North Korea might calculate that the US would not risk a nuclear war to protect Japan, thus lowering the threshold for offensive action. This and the recent blackmail of Chinese & Russian nuclear capable bombers flying towards Tokio, puts pressure on Japan to develop its own nuclear weapons, which it can do so in months, with miniaturization of warheads taking approximately 5-6 years. A nuclear Japan is not in the interest of the US for a couple of reasons: 1) The US cannot exclude the possibility that Japan could in the distant future become a US adversary 2) Proliferation of nuclear weapons leads to more countries seeking them 3) As it extends the club of nuclear states, it dillutes the priviledged power position that existing club members enjoy. Thus the US should take the initiative and redeploy nuclear weapons to Japan, to increase the credibility of its extended nuclear deterrent. North Korea and China will act less boldly towards Japan and thus also deter offensive actions over Taiwan or on the Korean peninsula.
