The Forgotten Patriot Bina Das In December 1986, a badly decomposed, unclaimed body was found near a roadside gorge in Rishikesh. After months of investigation, it was discovered that the body belonged to Bina Das one of India’s bravest daughters, a woman who had once risked everything for the nation. Bina Das was a student of the University of Calcutta and the same fearless revolutionary who opened fire on Bengal’s Governor, Sir Stanley Jackson, in 1932 as an act of defiance against British rule. She was arrested and sentenced to nine years of rigorous imprisonment. After her release, she did not retreat. She joined the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was imprisoned once again, remaining in jail until 1945 for her unwavering commitment to India’s freedom. In 1947, she married fellow freedom fighter Jatish Chandra Bhaumik, but even after independence she chose a life of simplicity over recognition. After her husband’s death, she left Kolkata and moved quietly to Rishikesh, living in a small ashram, teaching children for survival, and working in a private school for a meager salary. Despite living in hardship, she refused to accept the government pension offered to freedom fighters. A woman who had given her youth, freedom, and comfort for the country was ultimately left to die alone and forgotten on a roadside in the very nation she helped liberate. We as a nation should feel ashamed that such a heroic woman met such a tragic end. India may have forgotten her for years, but Bina Das deserves to be remembered with honour, gratitude, and a salute that came far too late.
