Change happens when we listen — and when we lift each other up. Last night at our fundraiser, we asked our community whose voice they’re honoring in this fight. The answers say everything.

The proposed City budget will have deadly consequences. When an abuser has access to a gun, women are 5x more likely to be killed. Black women are 3.5x more likely to be shot by an intimate partner. This disinvestment will deepen inequities and endanger lives.

While this administration pours millions into terrorizing Black and brown communities, cutting food assistance is a choice meant to cause further harm. It’s a deliberate act of cruelty, rooted in the same politics of fear that drive their callous immigration agendas.

Gun violence leaves a ripple of pain that touches families, friends and entire communities. The heartbreak of losing a loved one, weight communities carry and determination to turn grief into action are all reasons that survivors have joined in the fight to #EndGunViolence

#HispanicHeritageMonth is a celebration and a call for change. We honor the history and leadership of Hispanic communities, but also recognize that Hispanic Illinois residents are 5x more likely to die by firearm homicide than white residents.

As survivors of gun violence shared at a recent One Aim press conference, the increased presence of federal law enforcement in our communities does not bring safety. It escalates fear, trauma and too often, violence. Tragically, that is exactly what happened over the weekend.

There is no space in America for political violence. There is no space in America for our children to fear for their lives when going to school. We owe it to the lives already lost and those we stand to save to take bold, decisive action—now.
