New paper at AJPS: "The limits of AI for authoritarian control." The more repression there is, the less information exists in AI's training data, and the worse the AI performs. Ironically, data from democracies can help improve repressive AI.

PRC's response to the US/Israel strikes on Iran (appears to be the only official statement, issued ~10 hours ago): "China is highly concerned about the military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. Iran's national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity should be respected. China calls for an immediate cessation of military actions to prevent further escalation of tensions, the resumption of dialogue and negotiations, and the maintenance of peace and stability in the Middle East region." This is a standard, measured diplomatic formulation—typical of China's public stance on Middle East conflicts of this kind. Strikingly, the CCP mouthpiece People's Daily front page today (March 1) makes no mention of it at all. Is China adopting a wait-and-see approach?
