Where exactly in JAMB’s regulations does it state that a candidate must remove her hijab before entering the exam hall? Let the official dress code be made public. When did Nigerian law ban the use of hijab? Are there any clearly stated places where hijab is not allowed? Who authorized the officials that prevented a student from sitting for her JAMB exam because of her hijab? JAMB needs to come out clearly, address these concerns, and take action against any officials involved, if it is confirmed that they acted outside the law. And if such a rule truly exists, why is it enforced in some centers and ignored in others? We call on relevant authorities and organizations to stand up and defend the rights of these students. It is deeply troubling to see the rights of citizens being violated so openly, without regard for the law or human dignity. A student reportedly arrived to sit for her JAMB examination but was denied entry simply because she wore a hijab. This is not just unfair, it is a clear violation of religious freedom. There is no known provision in JAMB’s regulations that prohibits the use of hijab during examinations. In addition, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every citizen the right to practice their religion freely, without interference. Choosing not to wear a hijab is a personal decision. But for those who do, it represents their dignity, their faith, and their convictions. If there are concerns about malpractice or hidden materials, there are respectful and appropriate ways to conduct checks. A private screening, carried out with dignity, is the proper approach. Outright denial of access to an exam hall because of a hijab is not enforcement of rules, it is injustice. Authorities must understand that justice is not only about enforcing rules, but also about protecting the dignity and rights of individuals. Anyone found responsible for denying this student her right to sit for the exam should be investigated and held accountable.

No religion commands a woman to expose her body. But today, because many people no longer live by religion, the girl who covers herself is mocked, insulted, and treated like she is the problem. Imagine a young girl being stopped from writing her examination simply because she is wearing hijab. What crime has she committed? Is covering herself now a sin? Is modesty now wrong? If the daughter I raised is turned away from an examination hall because of her hijab, then they can keep that school. I did not attend such schools, yet Alhamdulillah, Allah has blessed me. Hijab does not stop a girl from learning. Hijab does not stop intelligence. Hijab does not stop success. A girl can wear her hijab and still become a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, or anything she wants to be. The real problem is not the hijab. The real problem is when people begin to hate religion so much that they see a modest girl as something bad. Nigeria belongs to all of us. No child should be denied education because of her faith. May Allah protect our daughters, strengthen our iman, and make us firm upon the truth.
