Traoré Stood in Moscow and Told the World: A Slave Who Cannot Assume His Own Revolt Does Not Deserve to Be Pitied. In July 2023, Captain Ibrahim Traoré stood at the second Russia Africa Summit in St Petersburg and delivered a line that has not stopped circulating since. "Our predecessors taught us one thing. A slave who cannot assume his own revolt does not deserve to be pitied. We do not feel sorry for ourselves, we do not ask anyone to feel sorry for us." He was speaking about more than history. Traoré described what he called the most barbaric and violent form of imperialist neo-colonialism still gripping Burkina Faso, and the volunteer fighters known as the VDP who took up arms against terrorism in their own country. He pointed out the double standard directly. When Europeans take up arms to defend their homeland, the world calls them patriots. When Africans do the same, they get called militias. The line drew immediately on the legacy of Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary leader who renamed Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, meaning land of upright men. Traoré has often been compared to him, not just in style but in conviction. This was never a call for sympathy. It was a rejection of it. A demand that Africa stop waiting for the world to feel sorry for it and start acting like a continent capable of writing its own outcome. Does pity from the outside world actually help Africa, or has it only ever functioned as another form of control? — Historical Africa🌍
