The global gaming industry is worth over $200 billion. African stories, African languages, and African social realities are almost entirely absent from it.
Kids across Ghana are growing up on games that were never built with them in mind. And when organizations want to teach life skills, civic education, or programming to young people, they reach for textbooks. Because nobody built the alternative.
Andy Korshie-Sherrie(@andykorshie) decided that was the problem worth solving.
He came back from Coventry University and didn't update his CV. He opened a studio. In Tema, Accra, with Ravi Allotey and Ebenezer Apau, he co-founded Organized Khaos(@organized_khaos). Three people. One conviction. What looks like chaos from the outside is actually organized intention.
Their first question wasn't "what game do we build?" It was: "what does Africa actually need to understand about itself right now?"
The answer became Echo.
You sit down to play and within minutes you are a content moderator at EchoSphere, a fictional African social media platform. A video just went viral. 40,000 shares in under an hour. The comments are splitting along political lines. A government official has sent your platform a message. Your CEO is watching your dashboard. You have to decide: is this true? Is this dangerous? What do you do?
This is not fantasy. This is not science fiction. This is Tuesday morning in every African city with a smartphone and an agenda.
Echo placed first runner-up at the GameUp Africa Jam for Democracy 2024. UNICEF brought them into Startup Lab Cohort 5. MEST, Maliyo Games, Leti Arts, KOICA, and the Goethe Institute followed. These are not organizations that collect startups for brochures. They invest in builders solving something real.
While Echo was being built, Ebenezer Apau was standing on a pitch stage winning the Africacomicade Ark competition 2023 with Code Quest, a game that teaches complete beginners to write their first line of code. Not a course. Not a tutorial. A game. Because this team understood early that the medium was the message.
Their second product StoriWeave places young people inside choose-your-path narratives where every decision is a lesson about consequence. Not a textbook wearing a gaming costume. A genuine thinking environment for a generation that learns by doing, not by reading.
Entertainment and education were never opposites. Someone just never bothered to build the proof from this side of the world.
Three people. Tema, Accra. Titles shipping on Android, PC, Mac, and VR. Competing on a continental stage with studios that have been doing this for decades.
The $200 billion industry didn't come to Africa. So Africa is building its own.
