I learned the passing of Obbo Bulcha Demeksa with profound sadness. His departure at age of 95 brings an end of an era.
Obbo Bulcha was a visionary leader, a distinguished public servant, and a champion of social and economic justice in Ethiopia. As an economist, he leaves a legacy of a trailblazing figure in Ethiopia’s financial and economic sectors that date back to more than half a century.
As a politician, he uplifted millions during his tenure as a Member of Parliament and the founder of the opposition Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM), later merging with Oromo National Congress to create Oromo Federalist Congress ( OFC). His bold and well articulated speeches and questions (sometimes witty ones) during parliamentary sessions under the EPRDF regime epitomised his commitment to peaceful political engagement and dialogue even when it seemed impossible.
Bulcha used the parliament platform and his voice to amplify the voices of the economically and socially marginalised and fought tirelessly for justice.
Most importantly, as a revered Oromo, Bulcha’s contributions extend beyond what’s is publicly known about him both as an economist and a politician. He was a staunch defender of Oromo culture, language, and identity, working to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of our people at every opportunity he had.
He used his intellectual rigour and moral clarity in service of his unwavering advocacy for equality, human rights, and the federalist ideals, ideals that are put under immense strain as of late. But the generation he inspired, and mentored will continue to fight for the legacy he left behind.
May he rest in peace.
