Yesterday, @MzalendoWatch among other #PIERKConsortium Partners made submissions before the @Senate_KE Justice and Legal Affairs Committee on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2025. Presenting us were our Program Manager, @EdwardKakumu and Program Officer, Grace Naiserian.
The Bill sponsored by the Senate Majority Leader seeks to amend the Constitution to provide for additional seats in the National Assembly and Senate in order to realize the no more than two thirds gender principle in elective and appointive bodies.
It proposes to amend Articles 90, 97 and 98 of the Constitution and further intends to promote representation of People Living With Disabilities in the National Assembly and Senate so as to address historical exclusion from decision-making processes, and laws or policies that do not reflect their unique challenges and needs.
Among the issues that the submissions focused on, were:
✅The pathways to achieving inclusion.
✅Clarity on the allocation mechanism
✅Role of political parties in advancing inclusion
✅Sustainability and institutional design.
