doi.org/10.1080/132358…

doi.org/10.1080/132358…

Pufferfish are one of the most identifiable fish, and new fossil evidence confirms they've been cruising the seas of Taiwan since the Pleistocene. Two beautifully articulated fossil skulls were recently shown to belong to the genus Arothron, which includes the Dog-Faced Puffer.

New paper out in @Nature We analyzed nitrogen isotopes (δ¹⁵N) preserved in fossil fish otoliths from mid-Holocene Caribbean reefs and compared them to modern reefs. Modern Caribbean reef food chains are ~70% shorter than prehistoric ones. #article-info" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nature.com/articles/s4158…

Fossil fish otoliths let us reconstruct per-capita reeffish biomass and trophic structure over millennia. Across the Isthmus of Panama, Pacific reefs are more top-heavy and increasingly dominated by larger fishes, while Caribbean ones show predator loss doi.org/10.1098/rstb.2…
