Indeed, it's *because* terminal em-dashes so overused in American journalism—a stylistic crutch, meant to suggest a conclusive, clinching thought—that ChatGPT uses them so heavily. ChatGPT was trained on the corpora of the New York Times, etc., where m-dashes pullulate like larvae.
When I was editing @techreview, I rarely permitted them, and on those rare occasions when they did make sense, I insisted they be written as a complete sub-clause.

People are doing this weird thing now where they assume any text that contains an em dash was generated by AI. I was alive ten years ago and I remember people using -- even overusing -- em dashes.
