the unix philosophy sucks for modern computing. We don't need extreme fragmentation and mediocre ways of doing almost anything on every individual linux distro. There needs to be a robust and scalable init system. Plus all the other baseline things systemd (the software suite) provides.

systemd lost the plot a long time ago. they stopped following the Unix philosophy and now they're busy adding nonsense like age verification. Just like Firefox, systemd doesn't understand its core user base. There are plenty of distros without systemd

@nixcraft I think people need to watch this before mindlessly bashing systemd. It's absolutely not perfect, but the now tradition-based hate it gets isn't necessarily warranted. youtu.be/o_AIw9bGogo?si…

@nugss_ Rice. Absolutely unstoppable on his day. If he plays the rest of the season like he can then it's all over.

I genuinely think it's hard to win the league without a standout player who makes the difference when it matters. Liverpool had Salah last season. City had Haaland in 2023 and Foden in 2024. Chelsea had Hazard in 2017. Leicester had Vardy in 2016. I look at that Arsenal team and I still can’t point to the one player who comes clutch and wins you the league.

It's with much sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague Ralph Giles, or rillian as he was known on IRC. Ralph began contributing to Xiph.org in 2000 and became a core Ghostscript developer in 2001¹ . Ralph made many contributions to the royalty-free media ecosystem, whether it was as a project lead on Theora or maintaining Xiph infrastructure that has been used across the industry by codec engineers and researchers². He was also the first to ship Rust code in Firefox³ during his time at Mozilla, which was a major milestone for both the language and Firefox itself. Ralph was a great contributor, a kind colleague and will be greatly missed. ¹ wizards-of-os.org/archiv/spreche… ² media.xiph.org ³ medium.com/mozilla-tech/d…

@OxfordPhysics @UniofOxford "AI" can also block scientific progress by leading you down dead ends, presenting prior art without citation, hallucinating or simply blatantly lying. Far better to ignore it, cut off the revenue streams from the leaches and save the open Web.
