There's so much more to say about his work, which started strong and just got better: his last books were his best. But I'm still stung by the surprise of his unexpected death, and I'll be pondering his theological legacy later.

Dan Treier took a post at Wheaton and stayed there for the duration; he chose his major editing and writing projects strategically and left a legacy of evangelical theology worthy of the name. He is now home, but those of us still in via have before us an example of how to do it.

Dan Treier's vocation in evangelical theology began at the turn of the century when there weren't enough models available of how to do it right. No disrespect toward older theologians! But I was in Dan's exact age cohort, and the way forward was not obvious to us. Dan found it.

Honoring our beloved friend & professor Dr. Daniel Treier (1972-2025), Knoedler Professor of Theology; PhD Program Director. “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep” (1 Thess. 4:14).

It doesn't seem possible to have lost two dear mentors in one weekend, but alas, we have. Lord, have mercy.

Please pray for our dear friend, Dan Treier, who keeps taking hit after hit since his cancer diagnosis. He’s been such an encouragement to so many of us. I am among countless younger scholars he regularly encourages and supports in ways no one will ever see. Case in point: when I messaged him an encouragement when he first shared the news, he apologized to me for not telling me sooner. He was just diagnosed with cancer and was concerned about me.
