@CjGironda THANK you. We need to win now. There will be massive conference realignment/upheaval within the next 5 years (tops). We’d better have winning teams so we’re a top choice for a big-money conference, or else we might get left behind. Duke has figured this out.

BC’s goal should be to make the tournament THIS YEAR. I know it sounds crazy given the programs recent history but if the money is now there and we have an elite tactician as a HC, don’t waste any more time. Go for it. We’ve waited close to 2 decades. No more wasted years please

@pacdelory @CjGironda Vanderbilt had bad sports for decades and was able to engage their alumni. We just haven't been as aggressive as other private schools and our big pushes under Leahy have been for endowment and buildings and grounds.

@CjGironda @bcatleagle Alumni mostly don’t care about sports because all the teams have been terrible for years; and the teams are terrible because alumni don’t care. Vicious circle. Make some good sports memories for the current students and they’ll turn into alumni who donate.

@bcatleagle For such a wealthy alumni base why is it that we struggle so much with athletic fundraising? I know we’re a small private school but we shouldn’t be bottom of P5. Is it just that the university misappropriates the funds? Or is it lack of success for 2 decades turning people away?

People here are doubting that Reagan read Ibn Khaldun, but I used to assign the Muqaddimah to community college Ethics 101 classes. It’s not some obscure lost work. I promise it was widely studied as recently as 20 years ago. Academic standards used to be much higher, kids.
Sean W. Anthony@shahanSean

It's common (?) knowledge that president Reagan cited Ibn Khaldun for his tax policies, but what I didn't know is that the NYTimes (2 Oct 1981 A26) contacted Franz Rosenthal and asked him if Reagan understood him correctly. Apparently Prof. Rosenthal confirmed that he did!

@colingorrie Put a comma after “make” and it’s fine. “What did you make, ham and?” is colloquial but would work in casual conversation.

Here’s an experiment for you to try. If someone said “I made eggs for breakfast” but you didn’t hear the word “eggs,” you could ask for clarification: “What did you make?“ But if that person said “I made ham and eggs for breakfast” and you didn’t hear the word “eggs”, what would you ask? “What did you make ham and?” Most native speakers of English will tell you that question is just… wrong somehow. The meaning is perfectly clear but it just doesn’t work for some reason. This instinctive wrongness is the voice of your internal grammar of English: an unconscious knowledge of English that you never learned in school. Try it yourself, whether you’re a native speaker or not: Does “What did you make ham and?” sound wrong to you? And if so, can you come up with a reason why?

I am Italian. I have been living in the UK for many years, but I still swear only in Italian. The British swear like innocent teens who’ve just discovered sex, whereas even the mildest Italian insult will make the receiving person feel humiliated for existing and having heard it.
Burak 🏺🏛@bvrakvs

Japanese swear words are so childish "pig", "shit", "idiot", "die"... compared to the ruthless Mediterranean style that attacks at sexuality, honor, and the very existence of your entire family, nation, and God. Rarely does one hit you like a piece of genius literature.

@JesusSaves1500 1. Do you understand the arguments in favor of Mary’s perpetual virginity? 2. Why did the all great Protestant Reformers believe in perpetual virginity? (Luther, Zwingli, Bullinger, and Wesley all did; Calvin said it’s ambiguous.) 3. What do you know that they didn’t?

Points I'd like to make regarding Mary and the Catholic doctrines surrounding her: The New Testament distinguishes cousins from brothers. The New Testament does have a specific word for cousin. For example, in Colossians 4:10 Paul refers to Mark as the cousin of Barnabas. The Greek word used there is anepsios, which specifically means cousin. But when the Gospels refer to the brothers of Jesus Christ—such as James the Just and others—the word used is adelphos, which normally means brother. Because the writers knew how to say “cousin,” many scholars argue that if cousins were intended, that word could have been used. Several passages mention the family group together: Jesus’ mother and brothers coming to see Him (Matthew 12:46) Jesus’ mother and brothers traveling with Him or being nearby (John 2:12) This naturally reads like a household family unit, with Mary and her children together. If they were merely cousins, it would be unusual for them to appear so consistently as part of Mary’s immediate family. The stepbrother theory has no biblical support: Some traditions suggest Joseph had children from a previous marriage. But: The New Testament never mentions Joseph having an earlier wife. It never says Jesus had stepbrothers. The brothers are consistently described simply as his brothers. Because of this, many readers conclude the stepbrother idea appears to be a later explanation created to preserve the doctrine of perpetual virginity. In Matthew 2, when the family fled from King Herod, the text only mentions: Joseph Mary the child Jesus No other children are mentioned. The most straightforward explanation is that Jesus was the first child, and the others were born later. Historically, many scholars think the belief in Mary’s lifelong virginity grew partly from early Christian ideals that valued celibacy and sexual abstinence very highly. (Catholics in particular forbid marriage in the priesthood and celibacy) By the 4th century, influential leaders like Jerome strongly defended the idea that Mary remained a virgin. Over time, that view became widely accepted in many parts of the church. Lastly: Specific names are given, which sounds like a normal family listing. (James (The Just), Joseph, Simon, Judas) The phrase “all his sisters” implies more than one. The people speaking are locals who knew the family personally. This makes the statement sound like ordinary family knowledge in the town. It would be odd for them to name them and point them out if they were merely cousins.

On my way to Boston for a customer event and decided to give @Delta a try. As an @AmericanAir customer with status , curious to compare and contrast. First - no status sucks. No joke. Holy normie. Yeah - I know this is pathetic - but true. Second - plane more comfortable - even in the cheap seats. Third - no wondering 24 hours in advance if/when my flight would be delayed - and for how long. Fourth - if there was some way to transfer status…
