@scotthraines Blood meridian - the writing was prima facie excellent. The road was accessible, had an existential theme that made it worthwhile. To me, Suttree surpasses them both. The prose is excellent. I’d stack it up against basically anything.

Cormac McCarthy is a good metric for how well you can read—it’s not the faux literary fluff that gets praised today, but it’s also not readily apparent to the reader. So much is said in what is unsaid, so you have to really read. For example:

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

I think what convinced me Social Security needs reform is the realization that if we replaced the entire Social Security benefits system with a flat $30,000 a year for every retiree, the trust fund shortfall would totally vanish and the poverty rate for seniors would go *down*.

My lead 2026 goal is convincing progressives to stop prioritizing the benefits of rich seniors at the expense of poor kids. Because giving Social Security & Medicare the first claim on all tax dollars is forcing everyone else to fight over the dwindling, remaining scraps.

If your neighbour has a baby, and it cries ALL NIGHT, and it's room-is directly next to yours divided by a wall, is it okay to ask them to move the baby to another room?
My alarm goes off at 5am. This baby cries until 2, 3am most nights. I am exhausted. I am ill. I am childless by choice and I DO NOT need this.
I understand the mother is tired.
But you know what? This was not my choice. I'm experiencing the consequences of her choice and I am no longer understanding of it.

@usedgov Parents are so anxious and dysregulated. Working 2 jobs. Making ends meet. So many worries. Reading books is the last thing on their list.
We do give out books in our clinic to our kids and advocate it.
