On lawsuit abuse driving up insurance costs, Hochul said today: “I don’t usually use Florida as a model for anything… But they examined the facts… & 1 year later, prices are down about 10%. The next year… 20%. Doesn’t that sound like something we’d use right here in NY?"

On lawsuit abuse and fraud driving higher premiums, Hochul: “An entire ecosystem of corrupt people… trying to steal money from all of your pockets… a whole system of criminals… lawyers, doctors… fraudulently writing out more excessive claims… it’s all happening right now.”

Gov. Hochul explains the “ecosystem” behind staged crash claims: “It’s all intentional to create an environment where there are payouts… the whole ecosystem of a lawyer who convinces an individual to get involved… then there’s a doctor involved.”

Hochul: “We’re trying to hit the brakes on lawsuits that seek unjust monetary damages for MTA… if there is fault on our part, there should be compensation… But if someone causes a car crash, they should not be taking advantage of the taxpayers and the riders who fund the MTA.”

Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner, NY DOT: “Our insurance system is broken… even saving a couple million dollars in jackpot insurance payouts could mean more bus trips, shorter waits, and better service for everybody in the community.”

MTA Chair & CEO: “Whenever there’s a car crash, these folks try to find a nearby MTA bus to blame… even when our bus drivers are not at fault... It ends up wastefully increasing the MTA budget by close to $50 million a year… and it’s going to the billboard lawyer industry.”

“The MTA is self-insured.. but costs [go up]. The costs of litigation go up.. They’re sometimes forced to pay some really outrageous jackpot legal settlements, even when their own drivers are not at fault. And it’s costing us millions & millions.. So who loses in this? Riders."

Hochul: “Car insurance premiums are going up astronomically… New York State pays some of the highest car insurance rates in America, averaging $4,000 a year… We’ve seen an 80% increase since 2020 in fraud reports… criminals are trying to scam the system and it has to stop.”
