hi. we missed the way people used to talk about books. so we made a place for it. welcome to Pagebound...we’re like if Goodreads & Reddit had a baby, but it's 🌱 indie 🧃 anti-AI 🧙 & built by women who read to escape and post to connect

Human curation over algorithmic/AI curation any day! Our brains are much more creative 🌱 Pagebound is an anti-AI Goodreads alternative. You can think of our Lists feature like making an OG Spotify playlist for the community—the more niche & unique, the better

New feature: Reading Streaks ‼️🔥 If you find the streak motivating, you’re able to edit as far back as Jan 2024. If you don’t, you can turn it off in settings.

@pageboundapp i appreciate the effort to be inclusive year round, but what is the difference between spotlighting mardi gras/carnival or dia de los muertos and having an event for bhm or ipm? is that not exclusionary of other cultural celebrations that happen at the same time?

but you are still choosing which cultural holidays to spotlight?? there are so many holidays and occasions across all cultures, what is stopping you from having multiple events running at the same time?? will you do something for juneteenth or will there only be a focus on pride?

A follow up response for common questions we’re seeing about why we only have 4 events a year, and if the events rotate:

We made some posts that caused huge miscommunications about our Special Events and are taking the opportunity to apologize and provide context on our beliefs about the importance of diversity in reading; we have deleted the old post to prevent spreading further misunderstanding

@jojo_escapist Apologies, only so much space on here to explain! We will rotate events to highlight as many identities and cultures as possible, which is our goal. Our non heritage month system will let us do that more easily (ex. Lunar new year in Feb, Juneteenth for blk authors)

@pageboundapp Except you never mentioned rotating out, you simply stated you will not/don't do heritage month celebrations because it's performative, US-centric, and exclusionary.

And you can also just worldwide celebrations, not just US-centric months; besides BHM isn't US-specific, even if it originated in the US, same w/ disability month, pride month, AAPI heritage month, etc; inclusion is never one-country-specific when these minorities exist worldwide

This is something super relevant to all this discussion and I think ppl are not acknowledging it enough. It's a small team (2 ppl), and making the events take time and effort (especially not using AI, which is a priority in my opinion) We can't ask them to do things that +
Pagebound@pageboundapp

@tendrskin 4 special events + 4 quarterly readalongs encourages the entire community to participate, and it’s all we can support right now at the size of our community and with our resources (being a 2 person team)

@theachilleid Our special events are explicitly for highlighting different identities and cultures, they just arent named after heritage months which lets us do things like highlight Black authors outside of BHM (ex. A lunar new year event in Feb and a Juneteenth event for blk authors)

ngl there are many valid criticisms of goodreads but something that they ALWAYS do is make heritage/pride month challenges and highlight recs in + outside of those months... like...

@poisonedberriez Every special event highlights a different identity/culture; by not naming them after heritage months we have way more flexibility (like, highlighting Indigenous people outside of the November heritage month)

@tendrskin There seems to be a deep misunderstanding with what we meant by exclusionary. Please see my other reply x.com/pageboundapp/s…
Pagebound@pageboundapp

@tendrskin Here’s an example: Hispanic heritage month is October. Indigenous Peoples Month is November. We would have to exclude one by choosing to highlight a heritage month for the Fall event. In our system we could do both identities in the same year since it’s not tied to the month

@pageboundapp will there never be events for juneteenth or kwanza because they are us-centric? what about native american holidays? is their relation to identity too exclusionary?

@pageboundapp so how is promoting heritage months exclusionary? if you want to promote diverse reading, those seem like the perfect occasions to spotlight because of the wide breadth of topics that can be covered under black/asian/latino/hispanic heritage months.

@SACRIFlClUM Absolutely agree highlighting different identities and voices is critical, especially right now. Every special event centers a different identity/culture - they just are not named after the heritage months. Main reason is flexibility (ex. centering black authors outside of Feb)

its very counter productive, you should rather be “performative” and highlight those heritage months because its pretty much needed in this current political climate to show them off

@pageboundapp I do actually! I have zero issue with women or women owned businesses or poc or poc owned businesses I have not brought up the fact pagebound is women or poc owned, my only issue with pagebound is how i have been treated when asking for more queer content (not this interaction)

@tendrskin Yup we rotate celebrations every year. Re your Q about why there are 4 per year: it takes time to pick the books, design the badge, give people heads up to place library holds. Readalongs bring the entire user base together & many ppl want to stay in control of their TBR
