#seated for the first time ever

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Pett says journalist Amal Khalil received threats from an Israeli WhatsApp number during the last war, warning her to stop reporting or leave Lebanon “if she wanted her head to remain on her shoulders,” before being killed today in an Israeli attack.

On July 11, I asked Patrick Kingsley, the New York Times’ Jerusalem bureau chief, whether the paper was going to cover the news of a beheaded fetus killed by an Israeli airstrike in Shati Camp alongside his parents and 3-year-old sister, on July 9. He thanked me for the “suggestion.” Because I hoped against hope he would bring light to this horrific crime, I chose not to name him when I posted screenshots of our exchange. It was a Friday when I reached out. Not a single outlet had reported it yet. I offered to help connect him with people on the ground to facilitate coverage. He thanked me again and said, “We have a great team.” I asked if that meant they were pursuing the story. He didn’t respond. I followed up with him days later, sharing more updates. Still, no reply. It wasn’t until today that I felt true rage. This same bureau chief just published a story about the killing of more than 100 people who were shot while trying to get food over the past two days. He framed the massacre not as a war crime, not as state terrorism—but as an example of “Israel’s failure to plan for a power transition in Gaza.” My cousin Ali was among those killed yesterday. He had five small children. His violent death, like the deaths of so many others, was not acknowledged as a crime. Just a “failure,” another “episode,” another instance of poor planning. How do I know this man and have his number? He visited me at my home in 2021 to write a profile of me, which he never published. I hope he never does.

NYU is withholding this student’s diploma because he chose to recognize the atrocities being committed in Gaza.
