@TheCinesthetic I see, so Miles Davis didn't really even think about the movie, he just did his typical jazz thing and said,, 'there, you have a movie score now' ~ The music doesn't even fell right to the scene, doesn't fit, seems like music just playing that has nothing to do with the film.

Miles Davis composed the Elevator to the Gallows (1958) score in a single session while watching the film. After noting a rough cut, he gathered 4 musicians without rehearsal & recorded it in one take, creating a landmark in improvised film scoring.

Carlos Alcaraz on the possibility of missing Roland Garros “I have a long career ahead of me. Forcing for Roland-Garros could penalize me enormously in the future” “We'll see what the exams show. But I prefer to come back a bit later rather than rush.”

You don’t even have to be a musician, but if you’ve never gotten a co-sign from one of the old heads, you can never say shit to me about jazz

The problem with discussing jazz online is that most people speaking authoritatively on it are folks who whose engagement with jazz is purely consumerist and outsider, they don’t have any cultural connection and aren’t in community with anyone actively involved in the tradition

@Sturgeons_Law less 1910s and more so the '20s when jazz got its first real taste of commodification during the "jazz age" with minstrels like al jolson

@manio99_e @JacobLee2304 For me, art exists on a spectrum — l’art pour l’art and didactic art. The most compelling works of art for me tend to sit somewhere in the middle

The “video games are art” crowd gets very offended when you actually critique games like an art and don’t only invoke the prestige of games as art to stop people from making fun of you for having this be your only hobby at 30 years of age.

I’m sure “Jazz is dead” is a fun thing to say when it’s not your tradition, not your culture. Jazz is everything for some of us.

@harraulted @AlterStreams Because Sade is a generational talent and is black, Gilberto made Bossa rooted in his own culture that only crossed over into jazz when cats like Kenny Dorham started incorporating the style into their compositions There is a world of difference here

RE4 explored new grounds, took the series to new heights and crashed into glass ceilings of its own creation. You HAVE to respect it. 4R is made to fit into the mold of the remakes that came before and will come after it, co-opting popular design tropes of the day while at it.

@iycrtylph What's wrong with self-critical autobiographical reflections on fantasies of sins uncommitted? Most people have fantasies of sins that they don't commit; he recognizes both the price and the value of resisting temptation. newyorker.com/magazine/2006/…
