In case you missed this exceptionally important piece @aeonmag --one of the most important I have acquired and edited in a long time. Patient stakeholders must have a role in researching their disabilities. aeon.co/essays/we-need…. .

@michaelmiraflor What’s the benefit of physical print media aside from being an art piece on a coffee table? It’s very limited real estate with lots of competition. There are many people doing exceptional work in print but the costs are enormous and require pretty large donors to sustain.

Betting on print media to make a comeback. It won’t be glossy magazines, maybe it will be an evolution of zines at scale, or something else. Not niche like Monocle or trendy fashion magazine fare. Something halfway mass and meaningful. Physical and tangible and analog matters again, partially (mostly?) as a pendulum swing reaction against smartphone dependence and the negative externalities of digital lifestyles. Digital media has become ephemera. Corporations can decide that entire archives can be vaporized (MTV News), and consequential and meaningful revolutions in news media can be mismanaged to the ground (VICE, whose archive is also in jeopardy of being deleted at some point) as if they never existed. Meanwhile Millennials can still fine issues of Sports Illustrated, TIME, National Geographic, Playboy etc etc in the homes of their parents. Vinyl sales are up, film cameras and Y2K era digital camera sales are up, refurbished old iPod sales are up, cassette tape production is being revived…

@michaelmiraflor not only ephemera but so much of it has lost the art, and the punch and the dynamism the online medium was supposed to give, it's opposite.

What a loss to us in journalism, Hakai was one of the great ones, giving us years of great work.
Krista Langlois@cestmoiLanglois

Well, it's official: @hakaimagazine is ceasing publication at the end of the year because our funding is being cut. I'm incredibly sad for my colleagues, for the freelance community, for the journalism ecosystem as a whole, and for myself. Editing for Hakai has been a dream.

@RashidaTlaib @POTUS @means_tv you are wrong about the meaning of that and you know it. It is intentionally confrontational and antisemitic. I am disgusted that you are a Democrat. You can support Palestinians without being racist yourself.

This is good news for Lyme but not the tectonic news some are claiming — going all the way back even the most conservative on the issue agreed to something they called "post-Lyme disease syndrome;" said to be persistent symptoms unrelated to living borrelia; has this changed?
Global Lyme Alliance@LymeAlliance

For years, the CDC and others in the medical status quo have denied the chronic nature of Lyme disease. In some form or fashion, the CDC has resisted the classification of chronic Lyme for years, as in the the persistence of symptoms after an "appropriate" course of treatment.

@BevTchangMD @sebastiancatana I wonder if this is true to more or less of a degree --in other words, if it can be calibrated in patients. If, as in other conditions, we can answer this along a spectrum. I am hearing of some people coming down, even way down, but not off totally.

Understood. Perhaps more accurate term would be the dual intervention point: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/pdf/10.109… Which posits that there is this zone of indifference that encompasses the appetitive signaling you mention, among other regulatory mechanisms. A broader definition than yours, I think.

Very worthwhile questions! We typically say #obesity treatment requires lifelong management just like any other chronic disease — this is true for the majority of people But is there a subset whose #weight “set point” (more accurately: “zone of indifference”) can be permanently changed with temporary #medicine intervention? We need more #research to find out #OW2023 @ObesityWeek #obsm @obsmchat
Lauren Oshman MD MPH@l_oshman

#OW2023 very excited for future trials looking a de-escalation of #incretin therapy for #obesity. Most common patient question ... "can I come off this medication?" Dose reduction / maintenance / discontinuation needs to be studied. Also, switching to non-GLP rx!

Some news: After 8 years & 750 stories, I've decided to leave The Atlantic. Today's my last day. Being a writer means you can’t say things like "I can’t tell you what this means" cos, well, I can. That's kind of the point of me. So here’s an attempt at looking back & forward: 1/
